Dear Faculty and Staff,
I have the pleasure of offering you a brief communications update. Our current staffing includes Juls Davis, Digital Communications and Marketing Specialist, and Emily Barker, Public Information Assistant. I serve as director of all communications activities. We are also hiring a student worker from the School of Journalism and Communication to do some story writing during the summer and upcoming academic year.
However, we no longer have a professional photographer/videographer on staff. Recently, for example, we filled this staffing gap by hiring a local firm to take photos, video, and drone footage for our graduation ceremony. This work required some time to process the contract and a minimum of two weeks to obtain approval for flying the drone around our complex. With regard to cost, a contract professional photographer currently charges about $75 per hour at minimum. Consequently, for projects with short lead times, and for impromptu occasions, we often fill this staffing gap by taking our own videos or photos with our smartphones. Below are some tips for using your smartphone to capture photos and videos of suitable quality for use on our website or for social media posts.
Here are 6 easy strategies for taking better photos with your phone.
1. Obtain Permission from your Subject using the Model Release Form<https://communications.uoregon.edu/model-release-forms>
2. Clean the Camera Lenses with a Microfiber Cloth before Shooting
3. Use the Landscape Orientation for Video and for Group Photographs
4. Get Closer Instead of Zooming In to improve Picture Quality
5. Avoid Cluttered/Busy Backgrounds
6. Shoot Outdoors, in Natural Light
And, of course, please contact Juls and Emily for consultation or to arrange for a professional photo/video shoot.
This is the final issue of The Weekly for the academic year. For summer, The Monthly will be published in three issues in July, August, and September. Please continue to send any updates, upcoming activities, or accolades to Amanda Boehringer.
Thanks for another great year, and congratulations to our graduates and their mentors!
Randy
Reminders:
* Chat Auto-Retention Update: Starting June 30th, the chat auto-retention feature will be updated to retain only chats from the past 180 days. This predominantly impacts the ad hoc chat feature currently in Teams, but has implications for chats saved from Zoom and Skype for Business as well. Please refer to https://recordsmanagement.uoregon.edu/chat-retention for more information and share this information with anyone who may need to know.
Accolades:
* Audrey Lucero, Associate Professor, was recently selected to participate in the Student Experience Research Network<https://studentexperiencenetwork.org/mfp/> Midcareer Fellows Program funded by the Bezos Family Foundation and Chan Zuckerberg initiative. Dr. Lucero was one of 15 outstanding midcareer scholars who were awarded fellowships to collectively bridge equity-centered research on the structures (i.e., practices, policies, and norms) that shape students’ experience of feeling respected as valued people and thinkers in school with current topics in federal and state policy. Impressive work, Audrey.
* ORSN and CPAN received two new grants:
* ORSN and CPAN – SCESD Scope of Work extension ($100,000.00) – effective through August, 2021. This will support expansion of phase 2 evaluation and continuous improvement plan, development of research-informed micro-PD’s, and revisions to the ESD-wide and school specifics years 2-5 implementation plan. Great work, Nancy Golden, Jeff Todahl, and Sol Joy.
* CPAN – Lane County Community Engagement ($120,000.00) – The Yarg Foundation. This will support a pilot Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator (CEVC). The CEVC will be responsible for CPAN and 90by30 capacity building, implementation support to Regional Coordinators, metrics development, and evaluation assistance in direct collaboration with CPAN’s Director and the 90by30 Initiative Executive Director. Congratulations, Jeff Todahl and Sara Loveless.
* Please see the attached brief newsletter on faculty and doctoral student achievements in the Education Studies Department. Highlighted are Michelle Jacob, Lisa Mazzei, Audrey Lucero, Joanna Goode, Edward Olivos, and doctoral students Niki DeRosia and Max Skorodinsky. Agreed, resilience is more fitting. Thank you for your great work, all.
* CEQP has been working with an EMPL DEd alum, Dr. Erin Beard (class of 2020), who is now at the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). Erin and her NWEA colleagues created a podcast focused on grading for learning. There were six episodes and the sixth episode featured Heather McClure and CEQP. https://thecontinuingeducator.buzzsprout.com/1756943. Nice work, Heather and Erin.
