Dear Faculty and Staff,

I continue to be impressed by the professional development opportunities provided for us by our Division of Equity and Inclusion led by Vice President Yvette M. Alex-Assensoh. The opportunities I’ve joined in the past many months, and those offered during Black History Month have all been insightful and impactful. Most recently, I found Professor Lea Epperson’s<https://law.uoregon.edu/derrick-bell-lecture-brings-prof-lia-epperson-uo> colloquium, “Are We Still Not Saved? Race, Democracy, and Educational Inequality,” particularly insightful. I thought that she provided a deep and broad overview of the structural barriers to educational equity in the U.S., ranging from case law, to court orders, to housing zoning. Presentations from prior speakers are posted to the UO Lecture Series Website<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/uo-african-american-workshop-and-lecture-series>.

To be honest, our college would likely be unable to attract speakers of this renown. I encourage you to make your students aware of these important educational and personal growth opportunities<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/bhm>.

Regards,

Randy

Reminders:

  * Face Masks: Thank you to those of you who have been adhering to the mandated face-mask expectations when engaging in in-person activities on campus and in the COE-Complex. We have heard that some colleges are having face-mask compliance issues with in-person faculty, staff, and students, and while that has not been a significant issue in our college, it provides a worthy opportunity to share this reminder that all COE-community members and guests are expected to wear a mask when using the COE facilities https://coronavirus.uoregon.edu/regulations#face-coverings. Our gratitude for your COE pride in keeping yourselves and others safe.

Accolades:

  * Brian Gearin, a 2020 EMPL grad, was selected by the American Educational Research Association’s Advanced Studies of National Databases (ASOND) Special Interest Group (SIG) for Honorable Mention in the 2021 ASOND Dissertation Award Competition for his dissertation, Socioeconomic Status and the Co-Development of Executive Function and Academic Achievement in Elementary School Students. The reviewers noted that this dissertation presents a compelling argument for the importance of increasing understanding of the co-development of academic achievement and executive functioning, especially for socially disadvantaged young children. The award will be presented at the virtual 2021 AERA annual meeting as part of the virtual ASOND Business Meeting. Congratulations Brian!

  * The HEDCO Clinic was featured in an Around the O Article<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/hedco-clinic-maintains-lifeline-families-through-pandemic?utm_source=UOnews> last week. The article describes how the HEDCO Clinic shifted to teletherapy during the pandemic and how that not only allowed clients to still receive services but also allowed UO students to stay on track for graduation. Congratulations to the entire faculty and staff of the HEDCO Clinic, and our numerous student trainees, for maintaining and expanding services to clients throughout Oregon during the most challenging of times. Also, special thanks to Renee Mitchell for a well written story!

  * Lillian Durán, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, provided expert commentary in the Oregonian article The number of Oregon students getting some in-person schooling has doubled since December. Thanks , Lillian, for representing our college well!
