The following message is sent on behalf of COE SOURCE:
Dear COE Community,
The “Students of Underrepresented Races, Cultures, and Ethnicities” (SOURCE) group in the College of Education is seeking submissions for a bold Virtual Art Exhibit entitled Voices for Equity: Intent vs Impact<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/source/vfe2021/> that centers the stories and experiences of individuals who have experienced discrimination, microaggressions, or subtle acts of exclusion based on their identity as part of their journey in pursuit of higher education. This Virtual Art Exhibit is intended to provide a safe outlet for the college’s and University of Oregon’s community members, in the hope that in doing so we can support awareness and contribute to improving the climate by providing real examples of the experiences that we hope to change.
We are excited and inspired by works with similar concepts like <https://www.onemilliontruths.com/> https://www.onemilliontruths.com/ and are hopeful that, with your participation, our own smaller-scale creation will shine the same kind of inspiration in our college and around our campus.
The students hope the exhibit will do this in a variety of ways, such as, by:
● Actively moving the burden of pushing against these subtle and commonplace experiences from those holding typically marginalized identities to all allies in the University setting.
● Encouraging self-reflection, communication, and action-mindedness for all attendees as we use the exhibit to critically examine our own daily interactions, encounters, and choices.
● Generating awareness of the short and long-term impact that certain commonplace experiences can have on the mental health and well-being of people who identify as BIPOC by centering experiences that occur right here in our community.
● Providing an opportunity for those with these silent experiences to share their voices, improve inclusivity, and establish solidarity in their (our) shared journey forward.
● Providing a centralized focus in the college and around campus to facilitate discourse on the topic of discrimination and exclusion.
Questions:

  1. What does participation look like? Any COE or larger UO community member interested in submitting an entry may do so. The entry portal<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/source/vfe2021/vfe-submit/> is now open and will remain open through April 5th, 2021. All entries will be screened by a student review team before being included in the exhibit. Given the nature of the exhibit, all submissions will be vetted according to these criteria<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/source/vfe2021/vfe-editorial-criteria/> before being considered for the exhibit.
The exhibit displaying your submissions will open on May 6th, 2021 with a virtual performance by a visual artist. The exhibit will stay open for approximately two weeks, at which point we will host a Virtual Convening [Date to be announced] to engage in courageous discourse around these topics. More information on both the virtual performance and the Convening will be shared in future messages.

  1. I’m still not clear what I’m submitting. It’s your choice. If you have experienced a microaggression, act of discrimination, or subtle act of exclusion as a member of the higher education community, we encourage you to consider how you might be willing to (anonymously) share that experience in a visual or artistic format. This might be:
o A poem, essay, or quote about an interaction in which the intent was unclear, and the impact was harmful
o A painting about the impact of being excluded for reasons that were not rationally explained
o A sculpture representing the burden of having to explain your identity to provide a salve for someone’s momentary curiosity
o A musical composition that captures the mixed emotion of leading while needing (i.e., being called on as a representative for others who share your identity, or experience)
o Or any other visual or literary artistic item that can be uploaded as a pdf, jpeg, jpg, or audio file.

Again we urge you to view similar works like <https://www.onemilliontruths.com/> https://www.onemilliontruths.com/ and while ours will be on a smaller scale, we hope that this exhibit will inspire conversation, thoughts, and a way forward in healing by focusing on change within our own halls.
