Subject: The College of Education this Fall 2020
Dear COE New and Returning Students,
In spite of the unusualness of the year ahead, the College of Education faculty and staff are looking forward to beginning, and in some cases continuing, the new academic year with each of you. We have worked throughout summer to plan an engaging, fulfilling experience in the College of Education while keeping your health and safety as our utmost focus.
As you now know, the University of Oregon will be maintaining a "mostly-remote" schedule of instruction for the Fall Quarter 2020, with only a small number of in-person classes. The majority of courses will continue remotely, similar to the past Spring and Summer. Be sure to refer to your class schedule in Duckweb to determine the format of own classes and, most importantly, watch for updates from your instructors who will connect with you as changes become necessary or other course delivery options become available.
On September 24th 1:00 - 3:30 the College of Education will be hosting our annual Welcome Back luncheon as a webinar in which we will share some information related to changes you can anticipate for our on-campus facilities. (login information was shared in a separate email earlier today. Be sure to RSVP for the prize give-away!) Here are a few highlights to consider:
If you have in-person instruction or activities on campus in the COE this quarter, here is what to expect:
COE Buildings
* Coffee Shop Closed: Sadly, at this time the coffee shop that we all enjoy will be closed, and relatedly there will be no designated eating areas within HEDCO.
* Not many places to sit: As a reminder, we can no longer gather in large groups in common areas therefore many of the chairs from the lobby and open areas around the buildings have been removed. Some chairs remain for occasional waiting or studying.
* Friendly faces: While many of your typical faculty and staff will be supporting you remotely from a distance as they did during the spring quarter, there will still be friendly and familiar faces in our administrative suites in HEDCO (130 and 230) in the event that you run into unexpected urgent issues while you are in the buildings.
Overall Safety and Sanitizing
* Masks are required: Masks are required at all times within all buildings, offices, and classrooms. If you are in need of a mask, disposable masks will be available in HEDCO Suite 130.
* Staying clean: University staff will be following Oregon Health Authority cleaning and disinfection guidelines for facilities and high touch surfaces. Sanitizing wipes will also be strategically located around the building for your own use before and after using certain areas.
* Hands: Hand sanitizing stations will be installed at the entrance of the building and within each academic suite.
* Bathrooms: All of our bathrooms have been updated to include touchless sinks and automatic paper towel dispensers.
Distancing
* Still Zooming frequently: For the Fall quarter, the majority of your instructional activities, as well as your non-instructional activities and communication with faculty and staff will continue to be held via email, Zoom, or phone.
* Making Appointments: If you wish to schedule an in-person interaction outside of instruction, your academic program representative will ask you to schedule an appointment before you arrive to ensure that physical distancing can be maintained while you are on campus.
Classrooms
* Chairs have been removed from classrooms to reduce the maximum headcount to half or less than half of the previous maximums.
* Wipes will be provided to clean your personal areas before and after you use them.
* Classes lasting longer than 3 hours may be modified to incorporate 30-minute breaks (rather than the typical 10-minute break) to improve circulation of fresh air.
Coming to campus?
Starting September 29th, 2020, COE students may come to the COE complex buildings (HEDCO, Lokey, CSB) for the following reasons:
* In-person courses: For an in-person course that is scheduled in a COE classroom.
* Learning Commons: To utilize the Learning Commons (advance scheduling will be required for the Fall term, see more detail below).
* Pre-scheduled meetings: In rare instances a program may gather a small group of students for an in-person meeting or students may need to collect or exchange programmatic materials. These expectations will be communicated and arranged in advance and options for student attendance will be discussed. Be sure to always register your attendance at in-person events.
COE Learning Commons
* Reduced hours: The COE Learning Commons will be open 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday - Friday during the Fall. Check here https://learningcommons.uoregon.edu/current-availability/ to see if there are any changes or critical updates before coming to campus.
* Fewer workstations: The number of available workstations will be reduced.
* Online sign-up: Students interested in using the Learning Commons will be asked to reserve a seat or workstation in advance. Walk-in access will be extremely limited and will be based on the current density of that space. If you would like to reserve a study space, please email coelcdesk at uoregon.edu<mailto:coelcdesk at uoregon.edu>, or call 541-346-7616.
* Density display: Please check https://learningcommons.uoregon.edu/current-availability/, or the computer display located at the front entrance to the Learning Commons for current space availability. This screen will be updated regularly to indicate the density/available seats in the Learning Commons so that you will not need to enter to determine your own comfort level.
Our Individual Behaviors on campus:
For anyone spending any time on campus this Fall, each one of us will need to do our part to engage in new practices while we learn to live with COVID-19 for the foreseeable future. Most of these expectations are familiar to you now, but do plan to review them in advance of undertaking any on-campus activity to be sure you are doing your best to protect your classmates, your faculty, and your COE staff.
* Masks: As noted previously, by regulation, masks will be required at all times within the building (including when presenting/speaking).
* Physical Distancing: One of the best prevention measures is to maintain at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and others. This will be important in classrooms, on campus and off campus as well. We would encourage you to find ways to connect with friends and interact with peers while following the recommended physically-distanced guidelines.
* Hygienic coughing and sneezing: Even when wearing a mask, hygienic coughing and sneezing includes (a) coughing or sneezing into a tissue that seals the cough or sneeze so that droplets do not enter the room, (b) disposing of the tissue, and (c) sanitizing your hands. Alternately, inside of your elbow, or the inside of your shirt collar can substitute if a tissue is not immediately available.
* Staying home if sick: Students, faculty, and staff will need to self-monitor for symptoms. Anyone displaying any of the symptoms associated with COVID-19, including coming into close contact with individuals with those symptoms, should self-quarantine and contact the University Health Center (UHC). The university offers daily self-check guidance here https://safety.uoregon.edu/health-check-regulations
* Not touching, not sharing materials: Activities that previously required shared materials will be reformatted by your instructors and administrators when possible (such as writing on the white board, passing out hard-copies of materials). In other instances, where sharing materials cannot be avoided, use wipes to disinfect materials between use.
