Dear COE Faculty and Staff,
Please see the note below from the university seeking volunteers to assist in coordinating student testing and screening efforts at the residence halls. The university is seeking interested individuals starting as early as tomorrow.
If you are interested in volunteering (according to the guidance provided below), please work with your supervisor and unit director or department head to ensure that you have permission to do this within the parameters of your day to day work. There appears to be no additional compensation associated with volunteering.
If you are granted permission by your unit director and supervisor, there is no need to contact me, please follow the sign-up guidance below.

Subject: COVID-19 Testing Initiative -- Staffing Support Requested
Good Morning,
In coordination with the IMT, I am reaching out to you with an urgent request for your assistance with recruiting employees to assist in staffing the UO COVID-19 testing initiative as part of screening testing of residence hall students. To ensure our COVID-19 testing is achievable and as seamless as possible, we need adequate staffing to support students. This initiative is one of the top priorities we as a university should be collectively focused on regardless of our regular work, and this initiative is an excellent way to get involved.
The testing events start October 13 and run through October 15, thus time is of the essence. The employee sign-up process has begun, but so far the number of positions filled will not be sufficient to fully staff these large scale events.
We ask each of you to work in your portfolio to obtain employees who can assist with this effort. Up to 30 staff members total are needed. Specifically, 6 employees are needed for each of the 5 shifts (each shift is 5 hours).
Here is information about the assignment:
* Shift assignment - During their shift, employees assisting will be actively engaged in supervising student employees, checking-in students for testing, and providing building directions for the testing process. They may be required to take a 20 minute online HIPAA training courses. Safety of those being tested and working at the event has been thoroughly planned to allow a comfortable process for all.
* Compensation - Employees will be considered on work time during their participation and will receive their regular compensation for hours worked. Please note for non-exempt employees time will count towards time worked for overtime purposes, so an employee's schedule should be adjusted as possible, consistent with the collective bargaining agreement as applicable, to allow the work to occur during their typical assigned work hours for a day.
* Sign-up and questions
* Available employees can sign up for shift(s) at: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/c44597e2fd2046258abd55b4a6d1709f
* Questions about the nature of the work can be directed to: bgroen at uoregon.edu<mailto:bgroen at uoregon.edu>
* Questions about scheduling or HR considerations can be directed to: Nancy Nieraeth, Director of Talent Acquisitions at nancyn at uoregon.edu<mailto:nancyn at uoregon.edu>.
This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a university priority, welcome students to the campus community and assist them as they settle in for the fall term, and set a tone of community support and reassurance for what is a return to campus like no other. This is a unique and critical opportunity to demonstrate Duck pride by working with our teams to allow some to set aside other work for a moment to contribute to this event.
Thank you for taking action to join in this important initiative and others as they arise. This is the first of what we expect to be many calls for assistance as we move into and through the fall term. Our continued effort to work collectively is as important now as it has ever been.
Best regards,
Mark Schmelz
Chief Human Resources Officer and Associate Vice President
