Dear Colleagues,
With a sense of urgency and enthusiasm, Bertranna Muruthi, Lillian Durán, and I (Ilana Umansky) are convening the Network for Equity in Education Policy (NEEP).
NEEP is a College of Education initiative to increase the University of Oregon and College of Education's impact on informing and fostering greater equity specifically through educational policy targeting PreK-12 students who belong to underrepresented, marginalized, or minoritized racial or ethnic groups.
Our mission is to 1) use University of Oregon and College of Education's research to explore and examine policy solutions to pressing problems of educational equity and (2) promote ongoing collaboration and communication with educational decision makers and leaders to support the adoption of effective policies promoting educational equity.
We propose a tiered membership structure of the group, which would include core and affiliate members. Core membership will be open to all COE faculty including both NTTF, TTF, and adjunct faculty. Affiliate membership is open to all of the above as well as to faculty in other departments and at other universities, as well as to COE graduates. (As an aside, we have plans for student membership as well, but we are starting with faculty/staff/graduates). We will limit the number of core members to 8; we will have no limit on the number of affiliate members. The guiding principles are that core members will represent a diverse range of faculty members from across departments or units in the COE, will serve as ambassadors for COE education policy initiatives on- and off-campus, and will engage in strategic planning conversations around advancing equity-oriented education policy research and outreach activities in the COE. Core members agree to regular attendance at group meetings and events, and will help with activity planning and execution. Affiliate members will have no formal responsibilities to the group, but will attend group meetings when possible and are welcome to help plan and carry out NEEP activities, as desired. All members will be listed on our forthcoming website.
We plan to hold an official NEEP launch meeting in early Winter term with core and affiliate members. At that meeting we will present our founding document and initial plans for NEEP, learn about each other and our work, and collectively develop additional ideas and plans for NEEP.
If you are interested in becoming a core or affiliate member of NEEP please fill out this very brief Qualtrics survey which will ask you your name, UO or COE affiliation, and which type of membership you are interested in (core or affiliate). Please fill out the form by December 1, 2020.

We are very much looking forward to working with you to deepen and strengthen our engagement with and impact on education policy that will enhance equity in opportunities and outcomes.
Sincerely,
Ilana Umansky, with Bertranna Muruthi and Lillian Durán
