Dear Faculty and Staff,

Please join me in congratulating Emily Tanner-Smith, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Research, on her receipt of the newly established Thomson Professorship. As Thomson Professor, Emily will continue to serve as a research leader for our university and college, and for the academic discipline of Prevention Science.

For example, a sociologist by training with an emphasis on statistics (PhD from Vanderbilt University), Emily currently co-leads the Social Data Systems Network (SDS Network) for the college and university. Emily is an internationally recognized expert in research synthesis methods and prevention science. Recently, she received both the Leonard E. Gibbs Award for Production of Rigorous Systematic Review on Social Welfare Policy and Practice from the Campbell Collaboration, and the Nan Tobler Award for the Review of the Prevention Science Literature from the Society for Prevention Research. Among numerous other academic honors, Emily was invited to serve on last year’s academic panel celebrating the recipient of the most prestigious education research award in the world - the Yidan Prize - awarded to Larry Hedges at Northwestern University.

Emily is a prolific scholar, with nearly 70 journal articles among many other publications. She is currently a principal Investigator or co-investigator for six active federal research grants and contracts funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Education. Emily also engages in considerable international service and scholarship. For example, she has served as grant reviewer for the McArthur Foundation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and Denmark’s Tryg Foundation, among others.

Congratulations, Emily.
