Dear Colleagues
Final Exams
In light of recent decision to prohibit in-person finals, please note the following:
* Carefully consider how your adjustments with final exams and final grades will impact students. For instance, in courses where a final exam is noted in your syllabus as a significant percent of the course grade, cancelling the final and basing the course grades only on work to this point would not be fair to students and will likely lead to a significant number of complaints. We advise offering the students the option of not taking the exam and getting a grade based on work to this point OR providing them with an alternative take-home exam or assignment as a substitute for the final exam. Our guess is that the majority will choose to skip the final exam, leaving you with many fewer exams to grade, but also no complaints of unfairness. Adjusting in the students’ favor is completely appropriate during this extraordinary circumstance.
* Contact your students as soon as possible and let them know how you will be handling final exams and assignment of final grades.
* If you are using ProctorU for a final exam, students cannot be asked to pay for that service unless it was clearly stated on the syllabus that they would be required to do so.
Working Remotely and UO VPN
Here is a link to tools for working remotely: https://is.uoregon.edu/remote
Also, please note this message from IS regarding using UO’s VPN for off-campus access:
UO’s current VPN capacity is limited, so please don't use VPN unless you truly need to. Most applications don't require VPN for off-campus use, including Canvas, ProctorU, and DuckWeb. If you do need VPN, please log off when you're done actively using it. (A VPN upgrade that will increase capacity is planned for spring break.)
Thank you for all you are doing to serve our students during this challenging time. Please let the Academic Continuity lead in your unit know if you have questions.
