coe-staff: Gratitude for Student Advocacy

Dear COE Students,

When I announced the hire of Kylie Post last Friday (see original message below), I failed to mention how important student advocacy was for making this hire. The Dean’s Student Advisory Board (DSAB) membership provided both advocacy and a proposal for improving services for international students. Credit also goes to the Students of Underrepresented Races, Cultures, and Ethnicities (SOURCE) for their advocacy for better services.

Members of the long-running DSAB are directly responsible for many improvements made in our college over the past six years. The DSAB helped us remove or reduce many student course fees, provide better building access and supports for students taking evening classes, and gave feedback to faculty about desired curricular changes. I am confident that the newer SOURCE group will accumulate a similar record of contributions.

DSAB members include; Olivia Sparks, Katie Fitch, Heidi Iwashita; Claire Guidinger; Rowan Lowden; Jill Torres; Ashley Easter; Anna Cahn; Joey Gomez; Tre'Von Robinson; Christopher Hernandez; Dana Cohen Lissman; Rafaela Partida; Cynthia Saras; Abiloa Taiwo; Julie Staggs; Jessie Janson; Jackson Reuter; Jordan Zeigler
SOURCE members include; Dana Cohen Lissman; Maryanne Mueller; Abiola Taiwo; Akhila Nekkanti; Felicia Gutierrez

With gratitude,

Randy

Dear COE Graduate Students,

I was disheartened to learn of an email you received earlier this week about the presidential proclamation suspending entry for certain Chinese students into the U.S.

Going into this weekend, I want to assure you that all of us are working vigorously to support your success. I have been working for some months to hire a staff member to support the needs of our international students, and all students, staff and faculty who seek international services. We are still in the midst of completing all human resources paperwork, so this announcement is premature, but I think the risk of premature announcement is warranted given the uncertainty that many of you are currently experiencing.

Kylie Post will begin working for us part-time on August 1. Her contact information and office location will be announced prior to that date. Kylie will continue her appointment with the UO Global Studies Institute. You will find her pictured here (https://gsi.uoregon.edu/staff). Kylie holds an MBA in Marketing and Innovation Management and an MA in English Linguistics. An immigrant herself, and with broad experience liaising with and hosting delegations of scholars from various countries, you will find her understanding and helpful with all international student matters at the UO.

I close by reminding you that you enrich our college every day. We do not say that enough.

Regards,
Randy
