Dear Faculty and Staff,
We are strengthening our student recruitment efforts for all of our academic programs, and there are early indications of increases in the size of applicant pools. We are expanding on the ongoing fine work of our faculty, staff, and Lisa Fortin, in particular. This Friday evening (Saturday morning for those joining in China), for example, Kylie Post, Yawei Zhang (International Recruitment Consultant for China), a few COE alums and I will be hosting an information session for interested students and their families. I am also pursuing new part-time student recruiting staffing in the Portland metro area, with special outreach to prospective students from Black and African-American communities.
Of course, we are all recruiting students with every one of our activities - service, research, teaching or advising. New students of varied backgrounds and personal characteristics, from distant locales, speaking rarely heard languages, and with a range of temperaments and abilities not only enrich our work lives, they also attract even more interesting students, staff, and faculty to our community of scholars. Although the outcomes of the interactions among this mixing of scholars are unpredictable, new knowledge will certainly emerge, which is the unique societal contribution of a research university college of education.
Thanks for doing your part,
Randy
Updates and Upcoming:
* London Study Abroad Faculty Leader: With the announcement that VP Doneka Scott will be leaving UO soon, the Division of Global Engagement is seeking a new faculty leader for the upcoming Advancing Your Academic Success: Pre-Freshman Studies in London<https://geo.uoregon.edu/programs/united-kingdom/advancing-your-academic-success-pre-freshman-studies-in-london> study abroad program. This unique and inspiring program, which has run successfully since 2016, provides a small cohort of first-year students an impactful global engagement experience before they even begin their UO career. The faculty leader teaches a one-credit flagship course (“Advancing Your Academic Success”) while also serving as a mentor for students onsite. The other courses and program logistics are managed by the faculty and staff at our GEO London Center<https://geo.uoregon.edu/london-united-kingdom>. Interested faculty should contact Lori O’Hollaren (loholl at uoregon.edu<mailto:loholl at uoregon.edu>) and Will Johnson (williamj at uoregon.edu<mailto:williamj at uoregon.edu>) with the division of Global Engagement. Priority will be given to faculty who express interest by Friday, December 18th, 2020.
* Climate Workshop: Students in the Education Foundations program at the UO are excited to present a Climate Workshop on December 5, 2020 from 10am-2pm. This workshop is created by students for educators. If you are interested in attending, feel free to pop into the different sessions exploring: Teaching climate change across disciplines, supporting students’ emotions when teaching climate change, inspiring community-based climate activism, and keynote speaker: Kelsey Juliana, youth activist. Please RSVP by December 4th at 6pm HERE.<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_25GKwUrGhBTjHwh>
* Faculty and Staff Meeting: A reminder that our Faculty and Staff meeting is scheduled for Friday, December 11th , 2020 from 1:30 – 3:30pm. The agenda is attached. I look forward to seeing you.
Reminders:
* Equity and Inclusion Resources: A few individuals have asked about ways to be involved in equity and inclusion initiatives at the University. The University of Oregon Division of Equity and Inclusion has compiled some equity resources dedicated to action that we wanted to share with you:
* Visit the University’s “Listen. Learn. Act.” Website https://around.uoregon.edu/listen-learn-act .
* Additionally, many of you are already aware of the Strategies and Working Groups that meet on campus. For more information about joining a Strategies group see the Division of Equity and Inclusion website https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/strategies-and-working-groups
* Finally, the Purchasing and Contracting Services office has opened a specific procurement pool related to Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Vendors (both on and off campus) can submit to be part of this pool to provide trainings and other services related to antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion for members of the University community. Vendors in this pool will be able to work with university groups without having to go through the time-consuming bid process. Information about signing up to be a part of the university’s antiracism trainer or service-provider pool is attached.
* Employee Assistance Program: Please be reminded of the free and confidential services available through the Employee Assistance Program, via Cascade Centers<https://counseling.uoregon.edu/employee-assistance-program>. Even if you don’t need any of these services now, it’s helpful to review the benefits that we are offered in the event a need arises.
Accolades:
* Assistant Professor Sarah Stapleton is teaching EDST 410/510, Teaching for Climate Activism (the class hosting the Climate Workshop mentioned earlier), which is featured on the Provost’s new Environmental Initiative website: https://environment.uoregon.edu/ and https://environment.uoregon.edu/teaching-climate-activism. All gratitude to Sarah for providing environmental leadership for our college.
* Shoshana Kerewsky: PsyD, Senior Lecturer II (retired)/long-time faculty member in CPHS, has been recognized by the American Psychological Association with the 2020 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Ethics Education. In addition to chairing the Oregon Psychological Association Ethics Committee and co-chairing the National Organization for Human Services Ethics Committee, Shoshana has published, taught, and presented extensively on professional ethics. The APA Ethics Office says of this honor: “This award is given annually to an APA member psychologist who demonstrates significant and outstanding contributions to the profession of psychology through ethics education activities...” This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of Shoshana’s long-standing commitment to ethics education.
