Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty,

I found myself thinking about your emotional and mental health needs this week as I was attending a virtual conference on just this topic – the global increase of individual’s feelings of stress, sadness, and worry in response to the life changes imposed by the current pandemic. Our simultaneous challenges - the epidemic of murders and maltreatment of individuals of color and members of other marginalized groups, and economic problems such as job loss, hunger, and insecure housing - add to our emotional risk. It’s hard to imagine now, but we will have better days ahead. Given our record of persevering through tragedies and challenges for over a century, I am confident that we will respond to our current challenges by becoming better individuals and a better institution.

In the meantime, however, we have to take care of ourselves. Our mental health deserves as much care as our physical well-being. I am also cognizant of the fact that our cognitive resources are limited when we are under stress, so I understand why you might find it difficult to take action to maintain your emotional health when provided with a deluge of resources. I’ll offer only two.
