Dear Colleagues and Friends:

I encourage you to attend the 7th annual 90by30 conference, now just around the corner on Friday, November 1st at Lane Community College. The conference this year – an opportunity to review progress in a local effort to reduce child abuse and neglect – is highly relevant for the COE community. Our featured keynote, Miriam Calderon, Director of the Early Learning Division, will profile Raise Up Oregon. Raise Up Oregon (attached) is an ambitious effort to enhance high quality early learning and to align that effort strategically across Oregon Divisions and communities.

Information about Miriam is below.

My best, Jeff and the CPAN/90by30 team

Miriam Calderon

Miriam Calderon is the Director of Oregon’s Early Learning System. Before coming to Oregon, in partnership with the Bainum Family Foundation she shaped a new $10 million dollar investment in a birth-to-three system for the District of Columbia and served as Senior Fellow with the BUILD INITIATIVE, leading BUILD’s dual language learners programing and serving as a faculty member with the Equity Leaders Action Network. Previously, Calderon served as a political appointee in the Obama Administration, advising on early learning policy at the Domestic Policy Council at the White House and at the Department of Health and Human Services. She also served as the Director of Early Childhood Education at D.C. Public Schools where she played an instrumental role in pioneering universal pre-kindergarten implementation.
Calderon was also Associate Director of Education Policy at the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic civil rights organization. There she focused specifically on early education policy for Hispanic and dual language learner children. She began her career in early childhood working as a mental health consultant in Head Start programs in Portland, Oregon. She has published several reports on early childhood education. Calderon holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Delaware and a Master of Social Work degree from Portland State University.
Presentation:
Ms. Calderon will describe Raise Up Oregon, our state’s cross-sector strategic plan to invest in children and their families. She will outline Oregon’s vision, the values that inform that vision, and will address the vital role of collaboration and local participation toward communities where all children and families are connected, nurtured, and healthy.
