On Monday, March 11th, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), was pleased to honor Dr. Stephanie Wood with the prestigious Outstanding Partner Award. Dr. Wood is a research associate in the Center for Equity Promotion at the University of Oregon's College of Education. She is the Principal Investigator for an agreement with the National Park Service for the curriculum design and dissemination project called Honoring Tribal Legacies (HTL). The goal of HTL is to support educators with the inclusion of indigenous perspectives within their classroom curriculum.
According to Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Superintendent Mark Weekley, "Dr. Wood has been an invaluable part of our Honoring Tribal Legacies team. Her willingness to be flexible, innovate, and build relationships has been key to the success of the program."
Among many other accomplishments, Dr. Wood recently wrote a successful grant for the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Teacher Institute for approximately $180,000. As a result, this coming July (2019), 25 classroom teachers will spend three exciting weeks travelling the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail to learn about various indigenous cultures, their histories, and their experiences today. Visiting reservations, state, and national parks and museums, participating teachers will take an educational journey that will empower them with newfound tools to infuse their curriculum with a richer understanding of the American Indian experience.
Dr. Wood graciously accepted the NPS partnership award and said, "The National Park Service is so very generous to sponsor this endeavor to bring Native voices to the fore and create a more balanced, shared history of the West."
