coe-staff: Professor Joanna Goode receives endowed professorship

Dear Faculty and Staff,

It is my distinct honor to announce the appointment of Professor Joanna Goode as the Sommerville Knight Professor. Although many of you know Joanna, I would like to recount just a few of her many accomplishments that have led to this appointment.

Joanna is an avowed national leader in computing in teacher education, STEM+C teacher education, and educational equity. Among other national leadership activities, Joanna was recently appointed to a National Academy of Sciences Committee on the "Role of Authentic STEM Learning Experiences in Developing Interest and Competencies for Technology and Computing," and the Social Justice Action Committee of the American Educational Research Association.

Joanna is a prolific scholar. She has numerous journal articles, federal research grants (worth millions of dollars, and funded by federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation), book chapters, and numerous other written works to her credit. The second edition of her co-authored book - Stuck in the Shallow End: Education, Race, & Computing (published by MIT Press) - has become a standard for the field.

Locally, we value Joanna's contributions as a mentor and educator of our students. She is a lauded teacher of both undergraduate and graduate students, and teacher candidates. With regard to research mentoring, Joanna has chaired or co-chaired at least eight student dissertation committees, and is currently mentoring three additional doctoral students.

I congratulate Joanna on the extraordinary depth and breadth of her achievements.
