Healthy Relationships Dinner.pdf
Thursday April 18th from 6PM to 8PM: Healthy Relationships Dinner- Come enjoy a free, Hawaiian cuisine-influenced dinner with Family Housing, the Women's Center, Couples and Family Therapy, and Non-Traditional Student Services, as we engage in discussion around a pivotal topic: healthy relationships. Guest speaker Tiffany Brown, Couples and Family Therapy Clinical Director and Senior Lecturer, will provide an engaging and insightful presentation about how to care for our partners and ourselves.
Focus will be on introducing tools that are easy to include in your day to day for romantic, intimate, work, and friend relationships. We'll also provide resources for continuing education and engagement, as well as insight as to how people in relationships and individuals can find counseling on campus. This event values the diversity present in relationships and welcomes individuals of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship statuses to attend.

What Matters Most: Supporting Successful Transitions for Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Like anyone else, young people with disabilities want to enjoy a good
life-a meaningful job, a comfortable home, vital social relationships
and much more. Professionals, families, and community members
can each play a powerful role in supporting ordinary aspirations to
become a reality. This presentation will highlight evidence-based
systems change projects that produce and support successful
transitions to adult life. Moreover, it will emphasize how the
perspectives we hold, the postures we adopt, and the practices we
prioritize can bend the trajectories of youth with disabilities toward a
future of flourishing.
Erik Carter, PhD, is Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Special Education at Vanderbilt University and a
member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. His research and teaching focuses on evidence-based strategies
for supporting inclusion and valued roles in school, work, community, and congregational settings for
individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. He has received several awards for his research
including the Patricia Sitlington Research Award from the Division on Career Development and Transition,
and the Research Award from CEC's Division on Autism & Developmental Disabilities.

Reminder

The BEseries and the Center for Multicultural and Academic Excellence (CMAE) are honored to host BE Voice with Will Giles. William Nu'utupu Giles is a fa'fafine second generation Samoan immigrant, poet, and arts educator born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Their work has put them on stages ranging from the San Francisco Opera House to the Kennedy Center and into classrooms from the University of Papua New Guinea to Yale University. Will was featured in the HBO documentary Russell Simmons Presents: Brave New Voices, where they helped the Hawaii team win their first International Poetry Slam Championship; Will is also the first Pacific Islander to win the National Underground Poetry Individual Competition. Will's poetry finds the political seeds in personal stories and crosses oceans of immigrant identity, colonization, representation, and masculinity. Their work has been featured by NBC News, The National Parks Service, HBO, Bustle, LitHub, and Button Poetry. In Hawaii they have spent the last 10 years working with Youth Speaks Hawaii and Pacific Tongues giving back to the organization and community that first gave them a voice. They have served as a poet facilitator, assistant outreach coordinator, and workshop coordinator. Will lives for the moment of firsts in a blooming poet's eyes. The first line, first draft, and the first time someone opens their mouth and believes in the power of their own story. Join us for this free dinner presentation of Will's latest traveling poetry show and find your VOICE!

University Day is a campus-wide beautification event that takes place each spring. Hundreds of students, staff and faculty gather together to plant flowers, spread bark dust, dig weeds, and generally show that we care about campus. The tradition dates back to 1904 to prepare the university grounds for commencement ceremonies. Though University Day has evolved since then, it's a great way to have fun and work with other people from the COE outside of the office. An RSVP will be available closer to the day.
