Students will be notified shortly of changes coming to the University of Oregon's Find People directory. The directory will be adding another layer of security to their information. Beginning soon after October 10, student's name, address, and email will be hidden by default. In order for this information to appear in Find People, they will need to take action in DuckWeb.
What does this mean? Student information will not appear in the directory unless they log in to DuckWeb and opt in to being included in Find People.
This change was prompted in part by an increase in phone and email scams targeting UO students. In response, the Office of the Registrar, in conjunction with the UO Police Department and UO General Counsel, asked for students' information to be made less visible.
Information Services, the UO's central information technology unit, is working with University Communications to implement the changes. The process of removing student information from Find People will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and is expected to be complete by Tuesday, Oct. 16. The information to be removed includes students' names, majors and various other details.
For UO employees who need student contact information for work purposes there are several alternative sources, which require prior access, such as DuckWeb's advising menu, Banner and Canvas. Employees without such access should contact Julia Pomerenk, AVP and University Registrar, directly at jpom at uoregon.edu<mailto:jpom at uoregon.edu>, as should any members of the campus community with questions about the change.
Some details:
* Graduate employees and staff or faculty who take classes will still appear in Find People in their employment capacities.
* Even if they have opted in, student information will not appear to individuals searching Find People from outside the campus network.
* If a student has already made changes to their settings in DuckWeb, these changes will be overwritten. Information will remain private until they explicitly change directory information and submit changes again after October 16.
