coe-staff: Give Now to Create Safe and Inclusive Schools

Our ongoing research on LGBTQ students in Oregon consistently reveals that these students face a disproportionate amount of bullying and that 57% of students who were harassed or assaulted don’t report it. Equally alarming is that most of those (63%!) who do report say that nothing was addressed – and are often told to just ignore it. Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition. You may have heard about our UOTeachOUT summit that we hold annually to provide LGBTQ and ally students a leadership opportunity while simultaneously providing their teachers with professional development on how to support safe and inclusive educational experiences in school.

The UOTeachOUT summit helps 300 Oregon students and their teachers, grades 7-10 as well as future teachers who want to create safe schools for their students.

The cost of the summit is not trivial, however, which is why we need your support. Students and speakers (often nationally respected figures) must travel to join us, and materials and resources for the attendees must be purchased.

This May 2018, students will meet the host of Conversations with People Who Hate Me, podcaster Dylan Marron and will also have opportunities to participate in improv theater and arts based workshop activities!
