Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Krista Chronister as our first Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Equity, and Professor Ed Kame'enui as Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development. You will note immediately that we have reduced our number of associate deans by one. While this new staffing arrangement meets our goal of fiscal responsibility, it also allow us to more firmly address our goal of becoming one of the most equitable, inclusive, and diverse research university colleges of education. I will try to explain, briefly.

Our curricular offerings are the centerpiece of our work and mission, and our faculty and students have made strides toward meeting our aforementioned goals through continuous improvement of our curriculum. Faculty have made coursework requirement and sequencing modifications that are already showing evidence of creating greater access for students from diverse groups. In some academic programs, these changes are already showing signs of increasing both the quantity and quality of student applications. Krista will now be in a better position to work with faculty to accelerate these efforts and consolidate these gains. We think that this new associate dean position also reflects our valuing of equity, inclusiveness, diversity, and social justice. These are not added or ancillary activities. They are central to our core mission of academic excellence.

Ed brings national and international research leadership to his position. He also has the advantage of building on his prior legacy as Associate Dean for Research, and the excellent work of Lauren Lindstrom and Leslie Leve. These three scholars have taken our high performing college research mission to the highest levels of performance. I will also work with Ed to ensure that the outcomes of our research, the good that it produces for children, schools, families, and society, is communicated widely to the public and translated into improving practice at scale.

Brief biographies are below.

Enjoy summer!

Randy
