?Dear Staff and Faculty,

I am forwarding a message I sent below to Vice President Conover, President Schill, and Provost Banavar this morning. We do indeed owe a great debt to the faculty and staff that kept our college thriving in the dark budgetary days of the 1990s. Please join me in expressing our collective gratitude to them.

Happy Fourth!

Randy

Subject: National Graphic of Special Education research funding shows UO leading the Country

Dear David, Mike S. and Jayanth,

This graphic reveals much about the history and current status of the College of Education, and how the college was essentially rebuilt (after being closed as part of the early 1990's budget cuts) by entrepreneurial and talented faculty who were able to access federal research dollars to grow the institution. It is truly impressive to see our small state leading California and all other states in these research dollars, especially when "our state" is in reality just the UO. We owe a great debt to these faculty, primarily in the special education and related academic program areas, and in research units.

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest and most influential special education professional organization (They are also holding their national convention in Portland soon). They are important allies for us in the effort to sustain and increase federal special education research funding. Of course, the use of these federal research dollars and the outcomes associated with them are equally important, and it is here where we also exceed our peers by a long shot using metrics such as, a) intellectual property income, b) products and services developed, and c) local jobs created.

I thought that you would enjoy seeing the UO at the top.

Happy Fourth everyone,

Randy
