coe-staff: Congratulations to Kent McIntosh for receipt of a new IES grant

Dear COE faculty and staff,

Please join us in congratulating Kent McIntosh and his team for receipt of a new grant from US Department of Education (NCSER) entitled, "Neutralizing the Effects of Implicit Bias on Racial Disproportionality in School Discipline."

This new study will develop and pilot test a teacher professional development intervention to reduce racial/ethnic disproportionality in school discipline and special education referrals. The team's prior research indicates that implicit bias is a significant contributor to disproportionality, yet there are no research validated interventions to reduce the effects of implicit bias in school discipline decision making. This project will address this gap using a mixed-methods approach followed by a randomized controlled trial with schools in the Portland area, Michigan, and Texas. The project is a partnership with Erik Girvan, in UO's Law School.
