Dear Faculty and Staff,
We are pleased to announce the opening of a new COE grant management unit - OESL (see governance structure appended below). OESL is the product of numerous discussions among faculty, the Faculty Advisory Committee, and other individuals and groups over many months. We are grateful to all who devoted their energy, insight, and good wishes to this new effort.
We are now working hard to prepare for a Fall, 2017, opening before the start of the academic year. We will have more updates to share as we take strong steps to make our high performing research college the highest performing.
And, welcome back,
Randy and Leslie
Oregon Education Science Laboratory (OESL)
OESL Mission
OESL is dedicated to the discovery of new models, methods, and measures that substantially improve education and human development. This goal is achieved through leveraging the breadth and depth of scientific and research talent of the College of Education faculty in collaboration with the entire faculty of the University of Oregon; a leading American Association of Universities (AAU) and Association of Pacific Rim Universities member.
Organizationally, the OESL is a grant management unit (GMU) housed in the College of Education (COE) and governed by the research policies of the university and the COE.
Structure
OESL is led by a Director, Joanna Goode, Associate Professor, and an Associate Director (to be named) and will report to the Dean of the College of Education and the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development.
The Director
* collaborates with the faculty in the College and the university writ large, to set goals for the intellectual contribution of OESL within the university, to the state, nationally, and internationally and facilitates OESL members meeting these goals;
* consults with OESL staff and collaborators on all substantive matters before committing to particular courses of action;
* is responsible for implementing the policies recommended by OESL scientist council in a manner consistent with University policy;
* in consultation with the Dean, allocates research and office space to OESL faculty;
* assigns staff and collaborators to OESL committees;
* evaluates and makes personnel decisions concerning GMU administrative staff;
* oversees OESL expenditures with consultation from College finance and operations managers;
* has fiduciary responsibility for all OESL accounts, consults with the Dean regarding financial matters, and exercises proper budgetary practices to ensure compliance with UO, state, and federal regulations and ensure that expenditures do not exceed allocated resources.
Faculty Membership
* Any COE faculty member with an active research program related to the OESL mission is eligible to participate in OESL.
* Some faculty with a relevant program of research will be invited to affiliate with OESL at the time of their appointment in the COE, in consultation with the Dean and the OESL Director.
* Established faculty may be invited to apply for membership by the OESL Director in collaboration with the OESL faculty council.
* The Director, in consultation with the faculty council will make all decisions on faculty membership.
* Faculty may choose to change their research unit affiliation with OESL or any grant management unit after consultation with all relevant directors, and may affiliate with more than one research unit.
Review plan
OESL shall provide information annually to the Dean and the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development, listing its faculty, delineating its annualized budget, and describing its activities, accomplishments, and impact, and strategic goals for the upcoming year.
