coe-staff: Appointment of Leilani Sabzalian Ph.D.

Dear COE Community,

I am pleased to announce the hire of Leilani Sabzalian (Alutiiq), Ph.D., as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Studies.  Leilani earned her bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from our college.  Leilani worked as a special education teacher in the Kanu o ka ‘Āina New Century Public Charter School in Kamuela, HI, and as teacher and education consultant in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.  Among many other honors, she was awarded a National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship.

Dr. Sabzalian’s research is focused on how K-12 schools reproduce colonial discourses through educational policy and practice, which is the subject of her first book.  Her recent publications include:

Sabzalian, L., & Shear, S. (in press).
