Gabriela López-Zerón is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Michigan State University. Gabriela has a master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Oregon. Her program of scholarship is focused on the dissemination of evidence-based practices for ethnic minority populations in low-income communities in the US and internationally. She is currently the project manager of a NIDA funded study focused on the cultural adaptation of an efficacious parenting intervention for Latino immigrant families aimed at preventing substance abuse in Latino/a adolescents. She is also serving as research coordinator in a longitudinal evaluation of a housing stability program aimed at benefiting domestic violence survivors. In addition to describing the scope of these projects and her leadership role in the implementation of various research activities, Gabriela will describe her current dissertation study. This investigation is being conducted in close collaboration with a leading community-based agency in Brooklyn, New York, offering services to a large segment of low-income ethnic minority populations in the city of New York. The main objective of this study consists of exploring the level of acceptability and feasibility of delivering an evidence-based parenting intervention with low-income ethnic minority parents involved in the child welfare system. Clinical and research implications will be discussed.
