Dear EMPL Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Professor Jerry Tindal has accepted your nomination to serve as Department Head. Professor Tindal was singularly nominated to the position by your faculty and will begin phasing in his leadership during the Spring quarter. He will formally adopt all department head duties for the summer term.

As you know, Jerry (known to many as "JT") is not new to the role of Department head, having served not once, but twice before - once in the department of Teacher Education, and once in the Department of Educational Leadership. It is a true testament to EMPL faculty's confidence and trust in Jerry's leadership to request him to serve again in this role.

Jerry is eminently qualified for leadership in the College, having served frequently on influential committees within and outside of the College over the past decades while maintaining a strong and visible presence in local, state, and national research, and while making technical contributions to grants and assessment development nationwide. Jerry is also currently the Castle-McIntosh-Knight professor in the College of Education.

Jerry will continue to serve as Director of the Behavioral Research and Teaching (BRT) research unit during his term as department head, where he will continue to support and elevate the field of education by contributing to the important bodies of research that improve the lives of students with disabilities, enhance the capacity of large-scale testing and alternate assessments, facilitate teacher decision-making on test participation, and refine testing accommodations for all students.

As we welcome Jerry to this post, I would also like to take another opportunity to thank Professor Charles Martinez for his extraordinary service to EMPL. We will have an opportunity this Spring term to celebrate Charles' many achievements.

Jerry will be participating in a variety of orientation and training activities in the next few weeks to prepare him for this role. He will be learning our new human resources rules and systems, institutional assessment and research, and budgeting and planning policies and procedures, and be introduced to our new and expanded resources around campus such as our Ombuds, CBA, and student success offices, among other services and units.

Please join me in welcoming Professor Tindal to this key administrative position.

Randy
