Subject: preparation of five-year business plan by end of January
Dear Department Heads and other COE Leadership,
As the President and Provost announced yesterday, we need to remain fiscally capable of achieving our university priorities. Accordingly, we have been asked to prepare a five-year college business plan as part of this effort.
Pursuant to this requirement, and deadline, we will take the following actions in the coming days and weeks.
1. Melynn will be preparing and disseminating a variety of budgetary reports for your analysis and our mutual problem solving.
2. Brigid will identify time to discuss business plan development as part of our regular department head meetings, and determine how we might find additional time to work as a group on fiscal matters (e.g., perhaps lengthening meetings).
3. I will use our individual meetings to collaborate with you on faculty and program specific decisions that help us achieve our objectives.
4. I will work with you, and others, to identify which replacement searches can be placed on hold or cancelled per the President and Provost’s admonition to not fill positions as the preferred option to layoffs. Because they are aligned with our university priorities, our TTF searches will remain on course until further notice.
5. Brad Shelton will schedule a meeting with us to describe the known components of our new budgeting process.
6. Dianna will schedule a meeting between myself, Chris, Melynn, and your faculty and staff for mid-January to introduce every stakeholder to the process of preparing a business plan, share personnel and fiscal data, and request advice and counsel.
7. I will ask Beth Stormshak to engage our faculty advisory committee in the business planning process in January in the interest of obtaining advice and counsel from faculty leaders.
I will provide further information about all of these matters as they are received. I look forward to working with all of you to produce a favorable outcome for our college, which I have no doubt will obtain. After all, our work will be improved because “Nothing concentrates the mind or tests our character like a demanding goal…” (David Shi, President Emeritus of Furman University).
