Dear Faculty and Staff,
We have made a significant number of office moves again this summer in the academic departments, research and outreach units, and college-wide offices. With regard to the latter, I worked with many individuals and units, and with Eric Owens, our building complex manager, to better coordinate and organize our services for faculty, staff, and students. I also took this opportunity to subdivide the "Office of the Dean" into two units, and give these units names that better reflect their missions. The HEDCO 230 suite is now dedicated to Faculty and Staff Services. Consistent with this mission, all human resource, fiscal and operational, development, communication, institutional assessment, and academic services are now co-located there (a list of your colleagues and their new office locations is provided below).
The other unit, Student Academic Services, remains in the same location as always, in HEDCO Suite 130. In addition to my office, technology, event planning, tutoring, and educator certification services remain there. New services located in suite 130 include research and faculty development, and equity and inclusion.
Locating both units in HEDCO is designed to make it easier for you to access any services that you need. In addition, these locations are designed to increase coordination and communication between and within faculty and staff service units.
Space Pressures
These moves are also necessitated by our growing accomplishments and impact. For example, our external research and contract funding is at an all-time high approaching 40 million dollars, which necessitates hiring new research faculty and staff to perform the work. Some of the space vacated in Lokey by the development and communications staff will also be used to accommodate new research and contract hires. Similarly, our faculty census has increased by about 20% in a single year. Last year, for example, our tenure track faculty census stood at 39, whereas the figure for this year is 49. Planning for the future, we have 6 tenure track faculty searches underway which will place additional pressure on space in all of our buildings. Our new faculty members increasingly require research space. Some faculty research space needs are being accommodated by research units. In order to accommodate the diverse research needs of new faculty hires, space is also being repurposed from the basement of the Clinical Services Building, and from the newly vacated offices in the Lokey complex. Two new offices are also being built in the HEDCO 220 suite to accommodate faculty growth.
UO Space Support
The university is supporting our growth in several ways. For example, our administration supported the efforts of our EC Cares unit to acquire a new building, and the UO space advisory group provided new research space for our Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP) in the Millrace complex which resulted in additional space in both Lokey and the Clinical Services Building. In addition, university funds are being used to build new faculty offices and to make other improvements to the clinic space in HEDCO.
I know how difficult it is to change offices and office configurations. (I will never forget having to move into temporary offices in a former downtown department store for two years while the building I was housed in underwent asbestos abatement). I appreciate everyone's patience, good will, and understanding of the greater good as we grow. These are rewarding times for our college as all of our faculty, students, and staff work at the highest levels of accomplishment of any college of education on the globe.
