Dear College Faculty:

During the past month, our students, indeed, all of us, have witnessed several highly visible incidents of violence, locally, nationally, and internationally. These events may greatly affect our students, staff, and faculty. Our students who identify with the groups targeted are likely most impacted. As faculty, we continue to face the daily challenge of keeping our course content connected to our local, national, and international contexts and the impact of these contexts on our students' learning and professional and personal development.

As we continue with our summer classes and prepare for the fall term, I wanted to remind you of a few resources and opportunities to support you in your in-class and out-of-class interactions with students, particularly those who have been impacted by violence.

- We invite you to read with other College instructors Ta-Nehisi Coates' award-winning book, Between the World and Me. Coates' book is written in the form of a letter to his Black, 15-year old son about what it means to be a Black man in America. If you would like to join a small, casual summer group discussion about the text and its application to our students' lives and our teaching, please contact me by August 1 (kmg at uoregon.edu). See original email below for more information.

 - The UO Teaching Effectiveness Program offers a realm of instructional resources ranging from individual consultation, teaching observations, and instructional development workshops.

- The UO Center on Diversity and Community also provides consultation to faculty and academic programs/ units regarding issues of equity, inclusion, and diversity.

- I continue to work part-time this summer in my role as Assistant Dean for Equity and Inclusion. It is my pleasure to meet with faculty and programs that want guidance about how to support students, staff, and faculty who may identify with the groups and communities who have been targeted, as well as those students who do not feel included in this institution and their allies.

Best,

Krista

Subject: coe-fac: Reading Ta-Nehisi Coates' - Between the World and Me

Dear College Faculty:

Author Ta-Nehisi Coates' award-winning book, Between the World and Me, has been selected as the 2016-17 UO common reading book selection http://commonreading.uoregon.edu/ ; all incoming first-year undergraduate students will read and discuss the book during the 2016-17 academic year. Also, Coates will visit our campus on February 18, 2017 as the Ruhl Lecturer at the School of Journalism and Communication http://journalism.uoregon.edu/events/ruhl-lecture/.

If you are interested in reading Between the World and Me and joining in a small, casual summer group discussion about the text and its application to our teaching, please contact me by August 1. I will email all of those who are interested to arrange an early September time to meet and eat. We have a few free copies of Between the World and Me in the SAS office.

Thank you,
