A Place in the Middle
April - May 2016

Hello fellow social justice oriented educators and youth advocates:
May has arrived and with it arrives the 7th Annual UOTeachOUT: Equity Curriculum and Instruction Series on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Issues in Education. UOTeachOUT is the field project of the course EDST 455/555 Education as Homophobia. The UOTeachOUT field projects are six events and public forums where the students teachOUT in the community and apply their critical pedagogy knowledge to disrupt homophobia, racism, patriarchy, and transphobia in education. Co-Directors of this Theory to Practice curriculum and instruction project are Julia Heffernan, Director of UOTeach and Tina Gutierez-Schmich, Equity Director of Bethel School District.

This email announcement is to introduce to you the central focus and two keynote speakers for UOTeachOUT 2016. It is also to share with you the dates, times, and locations of the UOTeachOUT events for 2016. Finally it is to provide you with image files of the event posters you may share on social media as you see fit. UOTeachOUT events are posted at the COE web page UO TeachOUT<http://uoregon.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=5fe7ea627bb98e9ead0b69a3c&id=fdc7c1f1ed&e=68905a4c12> Program and at the program's web page UOTeachOUT.<http://uoregon.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=5fe7ea627bb98e9ead0b69a3c&id=4f8adf76f0&e=68905a4c12> Events can also be found on Facebook at UOteachOUT. If you are a social media bug please feel free to use the hashtag #UOTeachOUT2016 to share posters and information on your feeds or sites.

The central focus of UOTeachOUT is to share in the development of culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) and youth advocacy between COE faculty teacher educators, future teachers, community youth advocacy partners, families, and teaching colleagues k-12 school districts. The core faculty of UOTeachOUT have spent the past seven years developing relationships with these community partners to increase safety, inclusion, and access to a culturally sustaining education for all youth. A list of the 2016 key partners of UOTeachOUT can be found at the end of this message.

The UOTeachOUT partnering events include community development BBQueer, the two different keynote speaker events on CRP (one on campus and one in a school district) and the GSA Youth Summit. The events will all center on and address whiteness, anti-racism, heteronormative gender identity, homophobia, and transphobia in education. And we will be sharing an award winning documentary that offers a case study of a CULTURALLY SUSTAINING school community and curriculum through the speaking and film sharing of the film A Place in the Middle.

Below, as promised, is a calendar of all of the events for UOTeachOUT 2016. Attached is an image file for every event. Please share widely. We are really looking forward to seeing many of you at the BBQ and subsequent events this year.

With gratitude,
Julie Heffernan, UOTeach Graduate Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Tina Gutierez-Schmich, Equity Director of Bethel School District
and the EDST 455 UOTeachOUT student team of 2016

Our keynote speaker on education and curriculum to address and disrupt oppression is Dr. Robin DiAngelo. Department of Education Studies future teachers in the UOTeach program have all read and discussed Dr. DiAngelo’s “Is Everyone Really Equal.” In addition many of our students are now reading the text “What Does it Mean to Be White?” It is the goal of the UOTeachOUT project to share this literature out into our partner districts to create a larger community conversation and future of shared practice with our colleagues in k-12. To assure greater access to Dr. DiAngelo she will be speaking both at a local high school and here on campus on May the 10th.

Dr. DiAngelo received her PhD from University Washington and currently teaches courses in Multicultural Teaching, Inter-group Dialogue Facilitation, Cultural Diversity & Social Justice, and Anti-Racist Education at Westfield State University.

Our central keynote speaker for 2016 will model what culturally responsive and culturally sustaining pedagogy can look like in a school. The speaker is Hina Wong-Kalu, a Native Hawaiian māhū, or transgender, teacher who uses traditional culture and language preservation to inspire and educate her students. The film is A Place in the Middle, the true story of Hina’s work to support her middle gender student, Ho‘onani Kamai, to claim her place as leader of the school's all-male hula troupe. This true story offers a window in to what a school looks like when gender diversity, language preservation, and cultural heritage are all valued and communities are kept at the center of teaching and learning. Hina and documentary producers Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer will share with students and the community about this work.
The 25 minute film is also available to watch online here:
