coe-staff: Minoru Yasui Day - FREE BOOKS in Dean's Office

Dear College of Education Community,

House Bill 4009 designates March 28 of each year as Minoru Yasui Day in honor of the Oregon hero who fought against the unfair treatment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

Born in Hood River to Japanese immigrant parents in 1916, Yasui graduated from University of Oregon School of Law and was the first Japanese American admitted to the Oregon State Bar.  On Feb. 19, 1942, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Order_9066>, which eventually authorized the forced relocation and incarceration of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans just because they looked like the enemy.  Yasui believed Roosevelt's order was unconstitutional.  On March 28 of that year, he deliberately broke the curfew placed on all people of Japanese ancestry under the order and walked at night around Portland, Oregon.  His case was taken to the U.S. Supreme Court.
If you are interested in learning more about this UO Alum, civil rights activist, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, there are free copies of the book, Stubborn Twig, available outside the Dean’s Office (130 HEDCO).  Stubborn Twig details the lives of three generations of the Yasui family, including Minoru’s time at the UO, and was written by UO Journalism Professor, Dr. Lauren Kessler.
