Good Afternoon,

Five brief notices:

  1. Aaron Montoya is setting up for a student portrait at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 29. If you missed the faculty/staff portrait sessions last fall or wish to have your photo re-taken, he will remain set up until at least 11 a.m. outside 270 Lokey Education and will be happy to take/re-take your photo.
  2. I’ve written a short article<https://coe.uoregon.edu/coe-news/2015/01/28/new-branding-guidelines-and-the-coe-what-you-need-to-know/> in The Loop<https://coe.uoregon.edu/coe-news/> (internal news site) that boils down what COE employees need to know about the new UO branding guidelines and positioning. Please consider taking a few moments to learn how these changes affect you and let me know if you have any questions.
  3. Strategic Communications has hired a full-time media outreach person. Over time, this will result in more positive coverage about the UO and the COE. I will have regular meetings at which I will bring our strongest potential story forward for consideration. If you have suggestions for a story angle that substantially involves us (or you) and could realistically attract state or national attention, please let me know. Generally, trend stories have the best shot. In our world that tends to mean Common Core, bullying and violence, educational policy, and ed tech. We have identified and approached a core of experts to help respond to inquiries, but any faculty member may be called upon to do so.
  4. I’m looking for listicles, that is, useful and informative lists connected to your area of expertise or program that can drive engagement in our various channels, particularly social media. Examples could include “5 Things Every Parent Needs to Know About Common Core” or “8 Ways to Evaluate Your Child's Development.” While they may strike you as infotainment, they can call attention to more scholarly efforts like a recently published work. And like it or not, this is the kind of thing people are eager to read. I see them as the amuse bouches of content – the free taste that gets you revved up for the big meal. (Check out “Why is Academic Writing So Academic<http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/why-is-academic-writing-so-academic>” from the New Yorker.)
  5. In case you ever miss the COE newsletter, Education Matters, past issues are here<http://pages.uoregon.edu/edmatters/archive/>. The winter edition will be distributed next month.

Thank you,
Cody
