coe-staff: January 23 Faculty-Staff Meeting

Dear COE:

Last Friday's faculty-staff meeting had an outstanding turnout and a stimulating discussion of how to move forward in strategic planning around the COE's mission.  Dean Kamphaus shared his biases regarding programmatic decision-making in order to assist you all in understanding how he will advocate for the college moving forward.  Chiefly, these are:


*         Inclusion

*         Collaboration

*         Innovation

With these goals in mind, the group opened up into a discussion of avenues of exploration and agreed upon a multi-faceted approach:


1.       Targeted strategic planning groups are being formed to explore development of new areas of academic inquiry; new sources of research innovation and forms of collaboration; new structures to support our outreach and clinical/community-focused activities; the development of a new website; and the planning group formed in the fall will continue its work to render the COE budget transparent and align it with our values as an institution;

2.       A series of ongoing free-form lunches will be scheduled to provide a forum for exploring creative new ideas and creating the seeds for more targeted inquiry in the spirit of number 1, above;

3.       Focus groups targeting constituencies internal and external to the college will be formed as needed to support this exploratory work.

In the coming weeks, the dean will reach out to individuals who have expressed interest in participating in the planning groups described in 1, and issuing open calls for attendance at the creative lunch sessions, so that we may continue the important work of determining together where the future of the college lies.

Further, the dean's office will issue periodic updates on the products of these activities to increase the transparency of the process and encourage further collaboration among our faculty and staff within and between units.
