The Special Education and Clinical Sciences (SPECS) Department is pleased to announce the following colloquium presentation by a candidate for the open rank, tenure-related position in Special Education, Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences (SPECS).
Title: A Novel Approach to Content Area Curriculum-Based Measurement using Academic Vocabulary

Statement Verification, a novel approach to content area CBM, will be introduced including preliminary results of item and form development. Both the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize content area learning and higher order thinking for students in grade K-12. In addition, most multitier systems of supports (MTSS) frameworks emphasize screening and progress monitoring to use assessment in order to inform educational decision making. However, there are few instruments for screening and progress monitoring available within content areas as traditional CBM measures have to date demonstrated little utility. How Statement Verification fits into a broader research agenda will also be discussed.
John L. Hosp, Ph.D. is a Professor of Special Education and Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at the University of Iowa and Director of the Center for Disability Research and Education (CDRE). His research focuses on aspects of implementing multitier systems of supports (MTSS), particularly aligning assessment and instruction through curriculum-based measurement (CBM) and curriculum-based evaluation (CBE). He is currently developing an app for conducting observations of literacy instruction in elementary classrooms and an approach to content-area CBM. He has received over $9 million in external funding from three different offices of the U. S. Department of Education (Postsecondary Education, Indian Education, and Special Education Programs), two different state departments of education (Utah and Iowa), and subcontracts from Institute for Education Sciences and Early Reading First grants.
