coe-staff: Senate notes: April 9

Hi Colleagues - Here are my notes from the last Senate meeting.  It was a momentous one as the Senate finally passed the Academic Freedom policy and the Legal Services policy that have been in negotiations for several years. The Academic Freedom policy has gotten national attention because it extends AF to non-faculty members of the university community. The notes contain some background, but read the policies on the Senate website: http://senate.uoregon.edu/ .

The notes also describe the document that has become known as the Transfer of Authority document, which transfers authority from OUS to the new Board of Trustees.  This was presented to the Board at their meeting during spring break.  Read the notes to understand the fiasco that ensued.

The Senate is meeting this week to discuss the open meeting legislation directed to certain university committees, among other matters that were postponed due to a very long meeting on the 9th. The motion has been revised based on comments received when it was first proposed.  The revision is also on the senate website.
