coe-staff: All Good Things Must Come to an End...

Members of the College of Education Community:

I am writing to let you know that I have decided to step down as the dean of our college at the end of the summer. Reaching this decision has been difficult, as I truly love this university and college, and serving as the dean (your dean) has been the highlight of my professional career. However, after thinking carefully about the health problems I have had for the past year and a half (blood clots in my lungs and a recent heart attack), I must prioritize what is best for my family and me - I know that the most important thing I can do is to "stay on the right side of the grass."

I will return to the faculty in the fall and, at least for this coming academic year, I will continue to work with Kelly Menachemson on our college's development initiatives.  Even though I will miss being the dean, I can honestly say that I am excited about this transition and look forward to becoming a faculty member once again.

Provost Jim Bean will attend the first part of our faculty and staff meeting this afternoon at 1:00pm in Clinical Services Room 250 to discuss the process we will follow to fill my position. I urge you to attend the meeting to hear what Provost Bean says and to ask questions. In short, his intent is to fill the position on an interim basis for the 2013-14 academic year. A traditional affirmative action search process will begin in the next few months to seek and hire a new, permanent dean who will begin in the 2014-15 academic year.

As your dean, I have had experiences that I never imagined when growing up in the heartland. The greatest pleasure for me in this role has been learning about the incredible breadth of our college's undertakings. I was -- and I still am -- overwhelmed at the excellence of our academic and research and outreach units and what you all do to make our college one of the very best - anywhere.

Thanks for allowing me to serve as your dean this past eight years and for all the support you have given me. It has been a gas. See you this afternoon.
