Earthspeak: A Multicultural Model for Correcting Cleft Palate Speech
A FREEWorkshop proudly sponsored by the UO University Center for
Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD)
Girl after surgery
Earthspeak is a workshop designed to train speech pathologists and
educators to provide follow-up treatment or education of children with
disabilities.
Earthspeak has served multicultural populationsthroughout the world by
training mentors (often parents) at a "speech camp". Mentors then work
with the clients using the "Corrective Babbling" model. These techniques
have been found to be effective in minimizing hyper-nasal speech
patterns and improving overall speech intelligibility and acceptability
in individuals over age 4 1/2 through adulthood.
These camps have been used in conjunction with traveling cleft palate
teams who perform needed surgeries, but had been unable tooffer on-going
speech therapy. Rotaplast sends surgical teams worldwide and has
supported Earthspeak in Mexico for the past 2 years.
The Earthspeak model empowers parents of any culture to work effectively
with their children on a daily basis to train a skill, behavior or
speech/language.
