coe-fac: COE Commencement Options

Hello,
Our COE Commencement will be held Monday, June 17 starting at 1 pm on the lawn behind Knight Library.  The UO will be providing us additional information in the next 2 weeks.

In response to the annual "how can we improve commencement" question that is sent after each commencement ceremony, we have a few minor adjustments and questions to pursue for this year's ceremony.

Some helpful background Information Regarding the COE Commencement Ceremony:


  *   Ceremony time: The Provost currently allots the COE 90 minutes for our ceremony - although we went 10 minutes over that last year.  A request has been made to the Office of the Provost to extend our allotted ceremony time for future years by 30 minutes, but there is no guarantee that request will be granted as the UO commencement day is tightly scheduled.


  *   Doctoral students: Doctoral students tend to make up ~ 7% of COE students participating in the ceremony. Given the faculty advisor transitions and doctoral hooding, recognition of doctoral students tends to take about 10-15% of the ceremony time depending on the number of students.  The number of doctoral students varies from year to year between 25 - 40 students.


  *   Master's and undergraduate students: Master's students and undergraduate students tend to make up ~ 93% of participants.  Recognition for these two groups combined tends to take about 50% of the ceremony time.


  *   COE focus: The remaining ceremony time is taken up by the stage party welcome, remarks, and transition time. The stage party welcome and remarks consist of the Dean's welcome, the Associate Dean of Academic Affair's remarks, 2 student speakers (5 min each) and stage transition time.
