Subject: coe-fac: Associate Dean Request for Nominations
The following email is sent on behalf of Dean Randy Kamphaus:
Dear COE Faculty,
First, please join me in expressing my gratitude to Dr. Kathleen Scalise for her service this past year as the college's interim Associate Dean for Research. Kathleen will be stepping out of the role for family reasons at the end of this academic year. We appreciate Kathleen's role maintaining a cohesive voice for our work and for ensuring campus-wide advocacy for our activities during a difficult year for all of us.
As we tentatively anticipate a slow return to more typical activities in the coming year, we plan to engage in the full process of nominating and appointing the next Associate Dean into this role. Some relevant specifics of the nomination process are excerpted below (with minor modifications to reflect the 2017 transition to two separate Associate Dean positions - one for an Associate Dean for Research and one for an Associate Dean for Faculty Development).
At this time, I ask that core faculty in each department nominate or self-nominate eligible faculty-members for consideration by sending the name or names to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann by Tuesday May 4th, 2021. Please note, consistent with current practice, the appointment is typically .25 FTE and typically begins on September 16th 2021.
The Associate Dean for Research is responsible for overseeing, guiding, and promoting the COE research efforts, and is responsible for integration of the academic and research enterprises of the COE.
The Associate Deans shall be selected by the Dean from COE career faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor or higher. In the case of the Associate Dean for Research, a nominee at the rank of either Senior Research Associate I or Associate Research Professor or higher may be appointed. The Dean shall solicit and consider nominations from representative faculty. Preference for both of these positions shall be given to candidates with the rank of full Professor, Senior Research Associate II of Full Research Professor and relevant University level experience. The Dean shall consult with constituent faculty (i.e., department heads, unit directors, Program Directors) in the final decision making process.
An Associate Dean is appointed at 0.25 FTE for three years, beginning September 16 and ending September 15. The Associate Deans shall receive annual performance reviews, performed by the Dean, based on their responsibilities. The Dean shall solicit input (e.g., electronic, meeting) from representative faculty and staff within this process. These reviews shall be completed before the beginning of the fall term and address service during the prior academic year.
Associate Deans shall receive compensation according to the details laid out in the COE policy on compensation for administrative appointments.
Many of our previous Associate Deans for Research are still in circulation as COE faculty and may be willing to answer your questions as you consider self-nominating or nominating for the role. I am also always available for any questions you may have as you consider the expectations of serving the college as an Associate Dean. I look forward to your nominations and to another successful appointment in the ADR role. With gratitude.
Regards,
Randy
