Dear COE faculty and instructors,
The Office of the Provost is developing a cohort of faculty for HyFlex instruction this fall. HyFlex combines face-to-face learning with simultaneously streamed remote instruction. As we continue to deal with the uncertainty of the pandemic and our need for flexible modalities of instruction, the HyFlex model could offer an important transitional mode of instruction while some students remain remote and others return to campus. It would also permit students to continue their coursework when they are quarantined. Critically, it allows remote students to attend synchronously with their peers and to thus engage with the material in the same ways as those able to be physically present. This will be critical at any point that we resume more in-person instruction, and the goal is to teach in this way at a small scale in the fall to inform expansion in subsequent academic terms.
HyFlex courses will be scheduled in technologically upgraded classrooms. The upgrades include microphones, cameras, speakers and document cameras that are configured to automatically integrate with Zoom, be simple to employ for instructors, and offer an improved experience for overall instruction in this hybrid mode. All participating faculty will be invited to a workshop on best practices for HyFlex instruction and a tutorial on the equipment. Classes will also have Zoom Assistants to help faculty navigate the technological demands of engaging the remote students. The goal is a cohort of faculty who collaborate, share insights, and help guide this work forward in partnership with the Office of the Provost teaching and infrastructure support.
To be included, courses must have no more than 45 students enrolled and a faculty member willing to teach on campus. Courses will begin week 1 as remote, with an invitation extended by the faculty member for students who wish to be on campus to attend class in-person. Classes will be scheduled in rooms per public health distancing for the maximum enrollment. From those interested, a small cohort will be invited to participate, with the goal of some courses across all schools and colleges being represented in this first cohort.
Thank you for considering this opportunity. The hope is that this is a meaningful experience for faculty wanting to teach in-person to provide critical insight for academic planning as we continue to navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic. Please let your department head know of your interest by September 10.
