coe-fac: Kanopy Access Model Changing

Hello COE faculty,



I am passing on this message from our interim Dean of Libraries (Mark Watson) regarding changes to accessing Kanopy videos. We are moving to a mediated request model for new videos from Kanopy. More details below.

The UO Libraries will begin mediating access to new, unlicensed films through the Kanopy Streaming Services<http://researchguides.uoregon.edu/kanopy> starting on July 1, 2019. Kanopy provides a wide range of films for use in teaching and research, and the service has proved to be overwhelmingly popular. As a result, costs for Kanopy have continued to escalate significantly over time and unlimited access is no longer sustainable.



Mediation will help pace spending and result in better stewardship of university funds for new titles. At the same time, the campus community will still be able to access a great deal of unmediated content. All the films with time remaining on their one-year lease as well as the entire Janus/Criterion collection (on a three-year lease) will remain available for unlimited use. As yet to be leased titles will be made available as follows:

*         To UO faculty for use in a course or research

*         To GE's for use in a course

*         To graduate students for research



In order to contain costs, UO staff, emeritus faculty and the general public will not have the ability to request the activation and lease of new titles.


The UO Libraries will strive to make this change in service as efficient as possible. The procedures for requesting access to a title currently unavailable to the UO community are provided in the following LibGuide: http://researchguides.uoregon.edu/c.php?g=942709. Faculty and GEs are encouraged to review the information and submit requests for unleased titles at least one week in advance.
