coe-fac: Request for support at SAIL

Dear Faculty,

As many of you know, each year, our college is one of many colleges on campus who spend time in support of the SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) program. SAIL offers free summer programs to students from local high schools where they spend a week during the summer, where they travel to campus every day to learn some of the important steps they need to know about college life and gaining access to college. Programming typically includes offerings that provide information on the administrative side of things such as registration and financial aid, as well as introductory presentations around the various different majors and disciplines on campus.

This year, once again we have staff from all of our undergraduate majors and minors who have volunteered to be part of SAIL and to provide a session or two in which they will share information about a specific program in the College of Education. Our presentations are typically very engaging and they tend to peak high schoolers' interest in how they might impact or become advocates for social change.

I'm writing today because we still need one or two more volunteers to provide about 3 hours of COE-specific programming for this year's SAIL cohort of high-schoolers. We have a slot open on Tuesday, July 17 from 1:15 pm - 3 pm and another spot from 2 pm - 3 pm on Wednesday, July 18. Ideally, we would fill those two slots with two different presentations (or activities).

For those who may never have presented for a SAIL cohort before, we typically provide programming that is part lecture and information (providing insight into a college experience), and part engagement (something that gives the students an opportunity to fully engage with the speaker and each other around the topic at hand). This year we will have 20-25 rising juniors and seniors in our class.

I had a presenter who ended up being unable to present at the last minute, so please forgive the short notice request this year. However, if you are interested in taking one of these programming spots and spending time with this year's cohort of high-schoolers for an afternoon this summer, please let me know no later than Friday July 6th.

Thanks,
Lisa
