Dear Faculty,
I am writing today with a proposal to strengthen faculty governance. I seek greater access to faculty advice and counsel than is available in our current governance structure. I brought this desire to the attention of our faculty governance committee in the Fall, with a promise to make a concrete proposal at a later date.
In brief, I propose that we form a standing Dean's Faculty Advisory Committee, not unlike our currently functioning Dean's Student Advisory Committee. I propose further that we discuss this IDEA at the next faculty meeting on May 1. My initial thought is to form a faculty nominated committee on an annual basis, one that includes broad representation from the College instructional, clinical, and research units.
I offer the following examples of issues, decisions, and plans from my recent agenda, for which I seek more timely faculty input than is practical in our current governance structure.
a. Space allocations for GTFs, research units, student diversity GTF, etc.,
b. Responses to requests for input regarding University, State, and National legislative and regulatory proposals,
c. Responses to requests for College, community, university, corporate, and other collaborations,
d. Academic planning,
e. Enrollment management,
f. Fiscal planning and management,
g. Development and donor relations, and
e. Computer equipment replacement cycles.
My optimistic view is that we discuss the general parameters of this proposal, take some action at our next meeting, and begin committee operations in the Fall.
I thank you for considering my request,
Randy
