Dear David,

That "tree of colors" could be a rather veiled allusion to سدرة  المنتهى 
(https://quran.com/53:16), the "Lote tree [...] which was shrouded in 
colors, indescribable", according to a well-known hadith:

In this same vein, العزى, mentioned below (https://quran.com/53:19), is 
traditionally said to have been a tree.
