Lat. cuniculum > kuník’lo / kuníg’lo > koníʎo / konéʎo (Andalusi Romance -and Afro-romanic- forms originating the Andalusi Arabic form, a loanword, with irrelevant value í/é for the tonic vowel).

The Castilian evolution continues with a yeísmo process followed by rehilamiento > konéƷo, unvoicing plus velarization until ModSp konéxo (written conejo).

Of course, you must always pay attention to the pun with the derivation from cunniculum. (Ample bibliography on the subject).
