Summary
Airlines will be required to implement enhanced security screening measures for US-bound flights from foreign countries by Oct. 26. The enhanced screenings apply to approximately 280 airports in 105 countries. Airlines were given 120 days to implement the requirements that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced June 28. Aviation authorities worldwide have largely started to introduce the measures following the June directive, which requires increased scrutiny for electronic devices larger than smartphones. While no electronics bans are currently in effect for flights to the US, the DHS has stated that it could impose future restrictions on foreign airports that do not comply with the new security screening standards.

Noticeable changes that could be implemented include officials conducting short screening interviews with travelers; asking travelers to present and possibly "power on" larger electronic devices; establishing additional security checkpoints; and increasing the use of explosives detection equipment, including canines and swabs. The implemented requirements will likely lead to increased congestion at security checkpoints; officials have advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure due to possible processing delays.

Advice
Allow additional time for check-in and to clear security if flying to the US. Consider checking larger electronic devices, if possible. Prepare devices in advance, and plan for increased scrutiny if carrying larger electronic devices onboard aircraft.
