Good Afternoon Travel Coordinators -
The media has been quite busy reporting on airline issues recently, including irregular operations in Atlanta and several incidents involving passengers and pets onboard aircraft. Additionally, with the subject of airline "overbooking" very much in the news, here are some resources for you to share with your travelers.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) airline overbooking is not illegal, and most airlines overbook their scheduled flights to a certain extent in order to compensate for no-shows. Passengers are sometimes left behind or "bumped" as a result. When an over sale occurs, DOT requires airlines to ask people who aren't in a hurry to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation. Those passengers bumped against their will are, with a few exceptions, entitled to compensation.
