<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">I reviewed the survey to identify the key issues, sticking points, and themes. I want to share these impressions with the SEC and the Academic Council and in my remarks to the full Senate. </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121"> </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">Question 1: </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121"> </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">Mainly, the feedback was in support of the guidelines. There were no comments that said we need to reform the larger Academic Continuity Plan policy because of the new guidelines. Most Senators
did appreciate the work and clarity that the guidelines provide. They appreciate the faculty's control over the plan, protection for IOR’s, and the modality and flexibility of the plan.</span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121"> </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">Question 2:</span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121"> </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">The critical hang-up or sticking point is how some Senators see the guidelines as a political strategy to make it easier for administrators to weather a strike. The President's ability to call
an emergency relates to this sticking point and was mentioned several times. There were questions and negative comments about replacing teaching GE’s with instructors of record. This would create tension and further demonstrate the lack of pay for instructors
– if they are willing to be replacement GE’s. There was also a mention of the pressure junior faculty might feel during the strike.</span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">A Senator mentioned how the principles laid out at the beginning of the document aren’t mentioned throughout the document. For example, how do the principles balance out the emergency grades?
There seems to be a lack of understanding about emergency grades. I think it may be useful for the Academic Council to clarify what those grades specifically mean and the process and timeline that the Academic Council uses to implement those grades. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">Most of the other comments for this question related to clarifying questions, such as what happens if the strike goes into the Winter term or how the reassignment of graders is going to work
in practice. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#212121">Senators who responded to the survey (11) seem to support the key aspects of the new guidelines. Senators appreciate that faculty have a lot of input into the plan and aren’t calling for revisiting
the Academic Continuity Plan. Most of the concerns are still ideological. A few Senators want to support GEs and see the new guidelines as a way to lessen pressure on administrators and are also against the President calling the emergency. </span><span style="color:#212121"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
