Another task of the Senate Exec that I did not mention at Wednesday’s meeting is that when we need to replace someone who steps down from an elected committee, I collect suggestions from the Deans of the relevant units for names of potential
replacement candidates, then I run them by the Senate Exec for approval before making substitute appointments. This fall you should receive several opportunities to practice your consultative muscles in this regard, as we have lost two senators (potentially
a third), we are short two members of the Faculty Personnel Committee, and I think we need to add one or more members to the Graduate Council.

For the moment, our first proposed substitution to consider is for Senator Samantha Hopkins (Professor of Earth Sciences, CHC). Senator Hopkins has one more year in the Senate, but she is taking sabbatical leave this fall and, in consultation
with CHC Dean Carol Stabile, she has decided to withdraw for the entire final year of her elected term. Carol has recommended that we appoint Casey Shoop (Instructor of Literature, CHC) as the CHC representative to the Senate. I will ask for a vote on this
(and maybe one or two other replacement appointments) at the next meeting of the Senate Exec, October 20.

In the event that we get good candidates for the graduate Council, I may ask for an expedited vote (i.e., by email), as they have already started with the work of engaging with the new administrative structure Graduate Studies and it might
be nice to have their full complement of members before their second meeting of the fall. If anyone has concerns about an expedited process for approving candidates to the Graduate Council, give me a heads-up so we can discuss it (Dan and I have office hours
every Monday from 1-2 in the EMU (the Information kiosk on the ground floor look for tie-dye from)
