Dear colleagues,
This is part of an exchange I have had with Laura Pulido about the HSI proposal we will discuss today. I am concerned that somehow the more than three decades of community-building efforts of the Latin American Studies Program, of the CLLAS, the Spanish major, minor, PhD and the Spanish Heritage Program are somehow forgotten or erased from this context, and I want to understand why this is. See the exchange below, I am surprised that after my feedback and co-sponsorship of the motion these points have not yet made it to the new version of the motion.
Best,
Pedro

Dear Pedro,
These are strong points. I will definitely take this back to the wordsmiths.
Gracias!

Dear Laura,
This is a terrific resolution, please count me in. I would like to add several other key elements that will help us realize the common effort to become a Hispanic Serving Institution to this strong list of “Whereas” points:
* UO’s School of Global Studies and Languages currently enrolls over five hundred majors and minors in Spanish and it also offers a Major and Minor in Latin American Studies.
* UO’s successful “Spanish as a Heritage Language Program” is now strongly rooted in our campus, and it offers groundbreaking linguistic training to bilingual Latinx students.
* UO has recently launched a PhD in Spanish, the only such degree in the Pacific Northwest.
I am thinking of several other strong points, but these are some key ones that were missing. I think we can run the numbers of Latinx undergraduates who have studied with UO over the years as an institution, this might make it even stronger: showing the actual percentage of the student population overall and its growth?

Dear Raoul, Barbara and Pedro,
I am writing to you as members of the Academic Senate. As you may know, there has been an effort to push the UO to become a Hispanic Serving Institution. Work has stalled since Karl came on board, but he now supports this goal. This is good news, but thus far his plans do not include systematic engagement with the larger Latinx community on campus. Accordingly, Lynn Stephen, Audrey Lucero, and myself have been working with the leadership of the Academic Senate to write a resolution calling for greater engagement. We have drafted a friendly resolution and are hoping you will consider being a co-sponsor. Gerard, Alison, and Dan are already co-sponsors. I am attaching a draft of the resolution for your review.
We will also be reaching out to the larger faculty, but first wanted to target senators who could serve as co-sponsors.
If you are willing to be a co-sponsor, please let me know and I will add your names to the list. If you have any concerns that you would like to share - please don’t hesitate to let me know. It would be good to know what kind of issues we might anticipate in the process.
Thanks for considering,
Laura
