[Uosenateexec] Senate Executive Committee mtg - October 18, 2023

Dear Gerard and colleagues of the Senate executive committee,

After more careful consideration of the recommendations proposed by the AC and which we have only really had a few days to review over the past week, and in conversation with some of my constituents and other colleagues, I am left wondering why the notion of Emergency Grades has not been part of the conversations and instead there has been a flurry of activity to try and mobilize heads and faculty to bypass our IORs/GEs who may go on strike at some point in the next month. As a senate we approved a document back in 2019 which incorporated the notion of Emergency Grades (see attachments to the motion here<https://senate.uoregon.edu/senate-motions/us1819-10-academic-continuity-plan-policy-proposal>) if indeed an emergency is called up. This measure was more sensitive to the notion of academic integrity than the possibility of granting ¡°blank As¡± across the board, which has been mentioned as a possibility, or of heads and other pro-term and non-unionized faculty, to come in shortly to ¡°assess¡± and grade classes that have taken months to develop through unique expertise in the field.

I wonder if we could have a Senate discussion and possibly a resolution about the viability of emergency grades and to propose that the AC pays specific attention to that format, ie emergency grade granting to all students impacted by a disruption, rather than to the temporary hire of IORs and permanent grades as currently proposed.

Best,

Pedro

Good evening, everyone,

We only have one item on the agenda because it¡¯s essential. We should focus on understanding the specific recommendations approved by the Academic Council on the Academic Continuation Plan. Hence, please familiarize yourself with the recommendations attached to Betina¡¯s e-mail and come with questions or concerns.

Francis White and Ron Bramhall will provide a briefing regarding the plan. Thanks to both for their strong leadership and guidance as we maneuver a potential academic disruption.

Don¡¯t disseminate the recommendations widely at this point - they will soon be presented to the Senate.

All the best,

Gerard
