Dear SEC members, colleagues, and owners of the motion for Resolution in Support of Graduate Employees and Their Demands for Fairer and More Dignified Compensation<https://senate.uoregon.edu/senate-motions/us2324-03-resolution-support-graduate-employees-and-their-demands-fairer-and-more>,

First let me thank the owners of this motion for all the energy that went into crafting it. I am sorry it took me a while to write to you and for not having had enough time to voice my opinion at the last senate meeting where we discussed this motion. I choose to write this email to the SenExec list and the owners of the motion only because it refers to some things we had discussed at the Sen Exec meeting which I thought would have been reflected in the version that was presented to the senate at our last meeting.

I regret to say that I will not be able to support this motion as is because of the following reasons:
1. While it is strongly related to GTFF bargaining, I still think 2.2 (food security, housing security and cost of living issues) deserves to be a motion for resolution on own because it affects the entire student body.
2. The motion conflates separate issues, namely, the acknowledgement of food security and other issues (2.2), the value of GEs for the university’s teaching and research mission (2.3), transparency issues (2.4), and the issues voiced about Academic Council (2.4 and 2.5).

Here is what I can support, if you choose to take these points in consideration:

     * I will consider voting positively on 2.1 and 2.3 to ask the administration to come to a speedy and fair bargaining agreement, if it’s a separate motion for resolution.
     * I can vote positively on 2.2 if it’s a motion for resolution on its own.
     * I can request from the senate leadership that the senate have a deeper conversation first on points 2.4 and 2.5 (and an eventual motion for resolution (or legislation) without singling out any individuals.

Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this. I wish you all a successful completion of the fall term.

All the best,
Harinder
